A MAN who runs a pub in North Oxford has moaned about the price of beer.
We only know that because Thursday’s copy of the Oxford Mail tipped up late last night.
Andrew Hall, of the Rose & Crown, a public house in North Parade, complained that the so-called “beer escalator” is ruining his business. He, and a handful of others with an axe to grind, are heading to the House of Commoners next week to “lobby” MPs.
The very fragrant Nicola Blackwood (Conservative) is his local member of parliament. Oh and ours here in Mill Street, too.
In other news, yesterday’s Oxford Mail falsely reported the “electrical calamity” that afflicted Mill Street the other day, that we reported here on Volesoft Oxford. It said the power went down at 7PM while our electrical oven reported it happened in the middle of the night, something verified by the locals and by the Giant Badger of Mill Street.
We are still waiting for today’s Oxford Mail. Perhaps it will tip up tomorrow. Or maybe not… The Kite, in Mill Street, offers good nosh and the beers are good too and cheap as chips. ♥

have you checked out the West Oxford Democrats club on Osney Island, whilst further away than the Kite, which to my shame I still haven’t visited, its a classic working men’s club – right in the heart of Oxford! OK I admit I have just joined them myself but there name is horribly confusing as they are totally apolitical. However the place is a page torn of history, I suspect that prior to building the West Oxford Community Centre – it was the community centre!

I fear i am trespassing here, but this discussion of pubs and landlords in Oxford “tipped up” in response to a search i put in, seeking news of two Oxford pub landlords i worked for 50+ years ago, in the early ‘70s. I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge of the fates of Wally Else, landlord of the Turf; and of Robert Barford and his partner Bernie (she i hope still with us, where Wally (i’m sure isn’t) and Robert (i heard some years, decades now, ago, wasn’t). Robert and Bernie took over management of the Turf for Wally (whilst he went under treatment for his occupational health) in about August, 1970. Then, in January 1971, he and Bernie got their own pub, The Harcourt Arms, out at Stanton Harcourt. They took me, Frank Ross and Eni Macek, out with them, to revive the lovely old pub that had all but fallen asleep. That the Harcourt Arms is the fine place it is now (judging by its website) is surely thanks to Robert and Bernie reviving it back then in 1971.
Any news or anecdotage of any of these three publicans would be welcome. Just for the sake of personal memory. Thanks and apologies for this intrusion. Donald/Frank Ross (now living in Arbroath).
