Network Rail explains transparent bogs

I RECENTLY made a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to Network Rail.

Thing is, I was down to meet some bods in King’s Cross and, before I headed back to Oxford, realised I needed a wee.  In King’s Cross proper, you have to pay money to get access to a bog, but I remembered that if you walked a few hundred feet, the bogs in St Pancras International are free.

But after I’d had my wee, my little brain started thinking about how it would be if elderly and foreign folk like yours truly didn’t have spare change to “spend a penny” – or 30 pence to 50 pence as it is on Network Rail stations these days. Public toilets seem to have disappeared.

Network Rail’s reply is interesting, and you can find it here. I will follow this up.

NR has a transparency policy and it does make a profit on its bogs, if you take the time to read the reply.  But, it insists that any money it makes is spent on “improving the facilities”.

It wants to discourage “illegal activities” and that’s why it’s thrown up barriers, although, let’s face it, 30 pence or 50 pence is hardly going to be a barrier to illegal activities in a bog.

I mean, call me cynical, but really Network Rail doesn’t give a toss about its customers and its bog policy, far from being transparent, is pretty damn opaque.

Oxford “toilet man” hits out at British press

world_beating

COUNCILLOR JOHN TANNER (Lab), famous for pronouncements earlier this year that claimed part of the reason tourists from all over the world visit Oxford because of its “world beating” public conveniences (bogs), has written a letter to the Oxford Mail, having a go at the British press and David Cameron.

Tanner, who sports the fancy title of Board Member for a Cleaner, Greener Oxford, said in the letter that he wants a free press that will investigate the rich and powerful, and to educate and entertain. The Oxford Mail, he writes, has always been fair and honest.  But journalists at the nationals will “dive into the gutter” to get a story.

* Sources tell Volesoft that CoCo – a splendid establishment embedded in the Royal Oxford Hotel but nothing to do with it – will close on the 21st of December.  It has two other establishments in Oxford, another CoCo in the Cowley Road, and the Casbah, on the opposite side of the road.  We will miss the occasional breakfast we have there, but thankfully Mick’s Café is still open. CoCo in West Oxford is likely to become a Korean restaurant.

Oxford Mail puts toilets on the map

THE OXFORD MAIL which I’ve started to read because I live here in the watery city, has been running some really great stuff about Oxford City Council. Forget Kate Middleton, she is a never was.

It is all about toilets. According to this report on the OxMail, people flock to have a wee in Oxford from around the world. John Tanner said: “It is an international toilet,” he added. “People come from all over the world to use the Gloucester Green toilets and I think they look a bit dreary.” We dunno if Kate Middleton used the bogs on Monday when she visited a school here in Ox, but, somehow, we doubt it.

This produced some lovely responses from locals, according to today’s OxMail (42 pence, well worth it). Oxford is going to spend millions on the bogs and no doubt people desperate for a wee will welcome the fact that the current bogs shut at 9PM, sharp. And stink. ♣
