The Everywhere Girl

Let’s never forget the Everywhere Girl. Jen Kind is still everywhere if you search for the name on Giggle.

Dearie me day over at the INQUIRER

DEARIE, DEARIE me. Read the comments below this story on my old organ.

Lights go out at Personal Computer World

TO THE CLACHAN in Kingly Street to attend the wake of British magazine Personal Computer World (PCW).

Practically every hack that worked for the mag over the years was there – Guy Kewney, Simon Crisp, Barry Fox, Manek Dubash, Clive Akass – heck the packed gig was full of people and I was there because I gigged as a freelance for PCW in the early 1990s.

The magazine was a real force to be reckoned with for many years, and it’s a shame to see a fine publication go.  It’s another example of the schizzy problem big publishers have – they know that online is the way to go but are fettered with existing paper publications with all the overheads, including distribution and printing, that go with that.

It was great to see some familiar faces again, and I wish all the guys the best in the future.  The magazine was latterly owned by Incisive – that company bought the assets of VNU UK, the publishers that bought theinquirer.net from me a few years ago.

* Guy Kewney said Peter Jackson tipped up. I missed him. I don’t think Felix Dennis, the founder of PCW who has a gaff on Kingly Street managed to make it. He was on the flannel panel until the end.

TG Daily goes live

OUR MAGAZINE is doing exciting things. It also works on Crackberries. It is here.  I refuse to be a Twitterati.

Sources at www.theinquirer.net tell me that the magazine I created is going to be a vehicle for the small and medium enterprise market. This is difficult for me to understand.

When VNU bought me, the INQ was a very viable magazine. A then publisher said to me: “Mike, we want to do this with the Inquirer. What do you think?”

I said heck, it’s like selling a house. I sold a house. You want to turn it into a brothel, how can I stop it?

Examiner to compete with INQster, Rogister@Intel

I FRY OUT of Ole Bengaluru tomorrow, via Singapore, to the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) which is being held next week at the Moscone, a beggar of a place.

It will be a long fright, but I am up against the challenge to end all challenges. I will be competing with three or possibly four hacks from the INQster to bring news from IDF to our global readership.

Goodness knows how many Rogister people will be there. That rag is now, thankfully,  a very distant memory of 14 years ago. The INQ has whitewashed me out of existence. So has the Rogister. I don’t mind, ‘cos Wikipedia continues to tell its own version of history.

I sold my shares in the Reg back to an adsales geezer, flogged the INQster to VNU, and seem to have generated loads of jobs in the process. It was something of a coup hiring Paul Hales at the INQster to work for VNU again, we’re sure you will agree.

In America, I will be 11 and a half hours behind Ole Bengaluru. My loyal team of hacks in India will no doubt pick up the slack and deliver stories to the world that the INQster and the ROGster can only dream about, the little bunnies that they both are.

Lest you think I am in the slightest bit bitter about the Register and the INQUIRER, I’m not. Far from it.  I am satisfied at a good job well done. And I am looking forward to challenging them both at IDF!

My next step after the INQUIRER

I LEFT theinquirer.net last Friday. I’m not going away however, some of you will be horrified to learn, and there’s a new project in the offing. I’m going to keep my hand in here in the meantime.
