Mike; Don’t keep us hanging. What’s the story behind the pics?
The story is that Oxford is a city – although its cathedral is miniscule. But it was a redoubt for the Cavaliers much to the annoyance of the Puritans. Especially North Parade.
Plus, Oxford Jail – this address – has been imprisoning people for nearly 1,000 years whichever way you count it. So go figure :) Lots of hanging must have gone on.
My best London journalist mate assured me yesterday that there was a tunnel from the pub to Tyburn (now Marble Arch). And on the route to the regular hangings, they made sure the convict was as drunk as possible.
Tyburn (Marble Arch) was shut down because the people enjoyed the spectacle so much of people hanging. German word is schadenfreude, I believe. But watching people or things suffering, Gene, is not for me!
