This Intel tick-tock stuff is doing my brain in

AMONG THE MATERIALS Intel sent for the announcements it made yesterday was one about Quickpath and the first paragraph of this document is truly an outstanding example of marchitecture.

To wit: “Through its rapid ‘tick-tock’ cadence for microprocessor innovation, Intel introdces a new microarchitecture or a new process technology (that includes enhanced microarchitecture features nearly every year.”

When I was a kid, I went to see Peter Pan at an Aberdeen theatre. The scariest character was the crocodile who’d swallowed an alarm clock and also been fed Captain Hook’s hand and lusted for more bits of his body.

Hook always knew when the crocodile was around because of the tick-tock cadence from the alarm clock. Tick-tock is scary because sooner or later we know the alarm will go off and we’ll be woken up from our pleasant slumbers.

It’s also scary because it marks the passing of Time, the most powerful thing in the world, that marks the end of all things, and in the case of us humanoids, the end of our life.

Yeah, this Intel tick-tock marketing metaphor really creeps me out. ♥

  1. WELL SAID MIKE!

    intel’s tick-tock sucks!

it is nothing more as cheating on people.

It is Intels’s master plan for developing a new platform, then publish it with a lot of crippled features then wait one or two years so that they can lunch an ‘exteded’ version of their current platform which will force people who want to stay updated to buy a new motherboard and a new cpu insteat of allowing you to upgrade. This time it is all about Memory. That totally sucks. The nehalem will only support 1066 DDR3 for desktop marked while the servermarked will get ddr3 1333. In 2010 you will have to buy a new CPU and Motherboard if you want ddr3 1333 or ddr3 1600 for Desktop PC’s.

So AMD is alot better here.
They will lunch a new Architecture too (AM3) and also new CPU’s for AM3 but THEY WILL BE ALSO COMPATIBLE TO ITS CURRENT CHIPSET AM2,

By the way AMD’s new upcomming Deneb-CPUS will be as powerfull as the upcomming Intel Bloomsfield for the nehalem architecture.

so i will go for AMD this time. I absolutly don’t want to buy a new Motherboard for every little improvement which Intel is doing!
