Nvidia’s back is against the wall

AMD, according to reliable sources, is preparing some shock treatment for Nvidia on the graphics front later this year.

But the same sources reckon that it will be earlier rather than later, pushing Nvidia to the limits. We’d say that Nvidia is a little like Intel in that it performs better when it’s under pressure rather than AMD, which always seems to start misfiring when things don’t go exactly right.

The word is the AMD strategy is something to do with codename Thunder. But don’t be surprised if Nvidia has something up its corporate sleevies too.  Because we suspect it has. ♣

  1. stirring the pot again i see, ehh mr. Magee :). i’ve been a fan of you for years and i’m glad i’d stumbled on this blog from your past(Theinquirer). i hope you can spill some more beans as i’m a huge fan of AMD. i also like the sound of thunder.

  2. Its the sound of ligtening :P
    Thunder is the sound

  3. It would be about time for something following moore’s law.

We’ve basically been stuck with the same performance in GPU’s on the high end ever since the 8800GTX came out, which was a long time ago.

The only uptick we’ve had have been sli combinations but what a pain and expense that is.

  4. Well, what I saw so far from Dammit was more Thunder-Fart then anything else…maybe they should leave the x86-battle and doing something with Sun or so ;-)

  5. Come on let it be R700!

  6. wowwwwwwww…

    could you give less details…
was it complicated to do the massive amount of research that was needed for this revealing article???

  7. Have you noticed that before every generation comes out, ATI/AMD is going to smash Nvidia? There are stories about how AMD has contracts with 90% of system manufacturers, the AMD atrchitecture will blow the NV arch out of the water, and NV will be losing huge amounts of market share. But then it doesn’t happen.

I guess it’s more esciting this way. We all want AMD to thrive and keep Intel and Nvidia honest.

  8. The Inq always had funny stories likes this, and old Mike still has. There always been story’s like this and they where always wrong or excessively.

[Here – on this my bog you have got to have spellchucking swotched on. So cut out the typos, OK? “Old Mike”]

  9. Congratulation! both of your blog, and this post are high ranked in
“The top blogs of the day” report

  10. Thanks for posting.

  11. –AMD, according to reliable sources, —

anonymous, unnamed sources? well, they must be reliable, then.

–is preparing some shock treatment for Nvidia on the graphics front later this year.–

“Shock treatment”? Supposing AMD put out the best card on the market they’d only be putting a dent in the market, or even nvidia’s share of it. Let’s look at magical ‘numbers’, and marketing ‘science’ for these answers to questions that no one is asking.

–But the same sources reckon that it will be earlier rather than later, pushing Nvidia to the limits. —

Wait…wait…so do you mean those VERY RELIABLE sources that are SO UBER SECRET that they must be TS-CL., who couldn’t make a dent in their profits would be ‘pushing them to their limits’? What?

    — The word is the AMD strategy–
    We get it. Reliable sources.

    — is something to do with codename Thunder.–
    Because those sources told you.

–But don’t be surprised if Nvidia has something up its corporate sleevies too. —
Wait– you mean they have like, marketing strategists and stuff? Dude, that’s it, this is just too hard to believe.

    – Because we suspect it has. –
Are you telling us not to be surprised because your anonymous yet reliable sources who say nvidia will be ‘pushed to its limits’ also said they would probably have a new line of products made ten years before you ever heard of it?

Dude. You’re an idiot. [And you’re just plain rude. So on your bike.]

  12. When you’re stupid I have the right to tell you about it.

  13. s/When/[When; s/t./t.];

  14. by the way, make sure and visit my blog and website.

the website is down for a day or two

  15. You don’t have any rights to tell me that on my bog matey!

  16. LOSER!

Mike you are just horrible, just cut the crap

  17. Actually he does have the right… its called free speech. When you post a blog, its out there for criticism.

And obviously next gen card are just about due, this whole NV 9800 series is just a hold off and another chance to make some money before the big boy cards come out at the end of the year. I would hope just for competition sake that ATI can actually make a high end card that can fight the NV machine right now.

  18. That’s very debatable. The only difference between a bog and a news site is one is called a bog and the other is called a news site.

Sure, you can criticise, but the mod can delete the comment, just like on the INQ they don’t publish every comment they get.

There just ain’t no rules laid down on tablets of stone…

  19. Sort ’em out Mike; especially that snotty-nosed little whippersnapper ‘Slackwareboy’. How someone who’s clearly only just prised himself away from his mother’s tit has the ‘right’ to criticise someone on his own bog who’s worked in the industry for over 30 years is beyond me.

Personally, I’d just delete all his posts. Because you can…

  20. ‘Slackwareboy’ does have a certain whiff of NVidia fanboyism about him. I can almost picture his website without even going there.

Now here’s some pointless speculation for you…

Wasn’t Thunder the previous name of an AMD dual-socket motherboard? Could this be something to do with multiple GPU cores perhaps?

  21. I wouldn’t say their back is against the wall. I’d say there are rumors of such a wall that might exist someday. :)

But, it is (was) good to have AMD pushing Intel. It will be good if AMD can push NVIDIA. When companies have real competition, that tends to yield better and cheaper products for us.

I have an ATI card in my Mac and an NVIDIA card in my PC (AMD processor). I like both brands, but have found NVIDIA to be a bit better (a bit more card for the money). But I did like my ATI All-in-Wonder a lot. Both companies make some good stuff.

In any case, I hope AMD scores a success. I’d hate to see them weaken to the point that Intel can ignore them.

    YES! HE HAS BEEN WRONNNNNGED!

especially that snotty-nosed little whippersnapper ‘Slackwareboy’.

    Sorry.

How someone who’s clearly only just prised himself away from his mother’s tit has the ‘right’ to criticise someone on his own bog who’s worked in the industry for over 30 years is beyond me.

If he has 30 years experience he picked the wrong line of work.

Personally, I’d just delete all his posts. Because you can…

    Oh boo hoo.

  24. So – you bothered to check back, slackboy? You wanted to get a reaction and couldn’t resist responding when you did.

    Sad, really…

Come back when you’re out of nappies, and maybe we can have an adult conversation.

  25. it’s possibile but not likely that AMD/ATI can pull something like that , I think they will aim at the price/performance ratio in the mid-range like HD3000 , but that’s where the most of the market is . in the mid-range, of course they can make a lot of money with high-end but i don’t think AMD/ATI has done enough research and development to sustain a hing-end market with the financial dificulties they are facing , so they will have to satisfy with mid-range and concentrate on price/performance ratio .
    Good luck AMD/ATI , you’ll need it !

  26. Hello!
Very Interesting post! Thank you for such interesting resource!
PS: Sorry for my bad english, I’v just started to learn this language ;)
