AMD, according to reliable sources, is preparing some shock treatment for Nvidia on the graphics front later this year.
But the same sources reckon that it will be earlier rather than later, pushing Nvidia to the limits. We’d say that Nvidia is a little like Intel in that it performs better when it’s under pressure rather than AMD, which always seems to start misfiring when things don’t go exactly right.
The word is the AMD strategy is something to do with codename Thunder. But don’t be surprised if Nvidia has something up its corporate sleevies too. Because we suspect it has. ♣

It would be about time for something following moore’s law.
We’ve basically been stuck with the same performance in GPU’s on the high end ever since the 8800GTX came out, which was a long time ago.
The only uptick we’ve had have been sli combinations but what a pain and expense that is.
Well, what I saw so far from Dammit was more Thunder-Fart then anything else…maybe they should leave the x86-battle and doing something with Sun or so ;-)

Have you noticed that before every generation comes out, ATI/AMD is going to smash Nvidia? There are stories about how AMD has contracts with 90% of system manufacturers, the AMD atrchitecture will blow the NV arch out of the water, and NV will be losing huge amounts of market share. But then it doesn’t happen.
I guess it’s more esciting this way. We all want AMD to thrive and keep Intel and Nvidia honest.

“Shock treatment”? Supposing AMD put out the best card on the market they’d only be putting a dent in the market, or even nvidia’s share of it. Let’s look at magical ‘numbers’, and marketing ‘science’ for these answers to questions that no one is asking.

Actually he does have the right… its called free speech. When you post a blog, its out there for criticism.
And obviously next gen card are just about due, this whole NV 9800 series is just a hold off and another chance to make some money before the big boy cards come out at the end of the year. I would hope just for competition sake that ATI can actually make a high end card that can fight the NV machine right now.

Wasn’t Thunder the previous name of an AMD dual-socket motherboard? Could this be something to do with multiple GPU cores perhaps?
I wouldn’t say their back is against the wall. I’d say there are rumors of such a wall that might exist someday. :)
But, it is (was) good to have AMD pushing Intel. It will be good if AMD can push NVIDIA. When companies have real competition, that tends to yield better and cheaper products for us.
I have an ATI card in my Mac and an NVIDIA card in my PC (AMD processor). I like both brands, but have found NVIDIA to be a bit better (a bit more card for the money). But I did like my ATI All-in-Wonder a lot. Both companies make some good stuff.
In any case, I hope AMD scores a success. I’d hate to see them weaken to the point that Intel can ignore them.

it’s possibile but not likely that AMD/ATI can pull something like that , I think they will aim at the price/performance ratio in the mid-range like HD3000 , but that’s where the most of the market is . in the mid-range, of course they can make a lot of money with high-end but i don’t think AMD/ATI has done enough research and development to sustain a hing-end market with the financial dificulties they are facing , so they will have to satisfy with mid-range and concentrate on price/performance ratio .
